Crucible of Fate by Mary Calmes

Crucible of Fate, Mary Calmes, Dreamspinner Press
Change of Heart #4
In the secret city of Sobek, Domin Thorne is making his way as the newly chosen semel-aten, the leader of the werepanther world. He aspires to make sweeping changes—he’s set goals for himself and the people he chose to bring with him, modeling his reign after that of his friend, Logan Church. But Domin may have set too lofty a goal: his normal leadership style isn’t working.

While juggling a homesick Crane, a moody Mikhail, a bullwhip-wielding Taj, servants with murderous intentions, a visiting ex, and a mate on a dangerous goodwill mission, Domin has to figure out his new role alone. He also must determine how to deal with a conspiracy, all the while falling hard for a man who, for the first time in Domin’s life, reciprocates that love. Whether Domin is ready or not, Fate has stepped in to teach him a lesson: internal threats are just as dangerous as external ones.

The Were-panthers are back and sexy as ever!

This book starts just a few months after Honored Vow ends and we are back in the secret city of Sobek with Domin and his inner circle as they try to settle in and start trying to change hundreds of years of thinking and laws. I always feel like I am navigating a visit with the Queen when I read one of these books. There are so many archaic laws and procedures it makes you wonder how this race has survived when they have made almost no changes to adapt.

But lets be honest it's the characters that bring me back to these stories over and over again. What new power is Jin going to acquire....how much trouble is he going to cause and get into?? And why this may be Domin's book, Jin is definitely in the middle of everything.

The world that Ms. Calmes has created is original and her stories are always fast paced. While they may have a lot of angst, at the heart of every book is the love that the characters have not just for their mates but for the people they consider family. I always walk away from these books with a strong sense of family... especially the ones we choose not the ones we are born into.

I can't wait to see what adventures these character's will survive and thrive through next!

RATING: 5 Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries.  This book was given to us by Dreamspinner Press. Many thanks.
