Monday Monday

Hmmm….My first ever blog post! I saw the movie “Contagion” last night and there was a quote that struck me “Blogging isn’t journalism, its graffiti with punctuation..”. I will do my best to be better than graffiti today. My job is to review Andrew Grey’s “Love Means...No Shame”. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Grey at AAD in Philadelphia in August and I’m thrilled that I get to review the first book of his Farm series.

Geoff is in the city, living the gay life to the hilt, when his father's death convinces him to return to the family farm. Discovering a young Amish man asleep in his barn, Geoff learns that Eli is spending a year away from the community before accepting baptism into the church. Despite their mutual attraction, Geoff is determined not to become involved with him, but Eli has discovered that Geoff shares his feelings and begins to court him, neatly capturing first Geoff's attention and then his heart.
Their budding relationship is threatened by closed-minded, gossipy relatives and the society at large, a whole new world to Eli, and he must decide whether to return to the community, his family, and the world and future he knows or to stay with Geoff and have faith in the power of love.

This book really struck a chord and pulled a few heartstrings for me. I grew up in a rural area in the Bible Belt of the South and I can personally relate to the restrictions that religion puts on homosexual relationships. Mr. Grey does a wonderful job of making you understand Eli’s Amish faith and you feel the hurt, confusion, and joy that Eli and Geoff feel as their love grows and Eli struggles with whether to build a life with Geoff or return to his Amish home. “Love Means…No Shame” also includes a wonderful cast of characters that you just wanna put in your pocket and take home with you. What will Eli choose? Will he return to the personal prison of his Amish upbringing or will he take a leap of faith and build a live on the farm with Geoff.
