Reviews

Play Right By Me wraps up the charming 3 book series dreamily written by Patrice Wilton. Those who are dedicated to sweet and steamy contemporary romances, Paradise Cove hits the spot.  Starting with some sultry summer heat in Paradise Cove, loading the bases with Hooked on You, Play Right By Me had to deliver on a steadily improving game and knock it out of the park.  The question is, can Brittany's story deliver a home run?  The youngest of the 3 sisters, the flightiest and flirtiest of them all.  Can she really have a true blue, one-on-one romance that makes a reader jump up and cheer the team home?

Brittany Holmes is a hot mess.  No, seriously - she's beautiful, talented and too awesome to be true. And she ran off to Miami to make her dreams come true  with a touring dance troupe and returned home, battered by an abusive ex and pregnant to boot.  Determined to lick her wounds and make a go at the small town life, she hold up with the family at the resort and plays the dutiful hostess.  Ashley Chase (whose momma you know had to be a GWTW fanatic as his sister is named Melanie to boot) shows up desiring only the peace and refuge of Paradise Cove to make his return into the world of great playwrights.  He is there in her darkest hour and becomes the only man to ever take the time to get to know the real Brittany.  And suddenly the dingbat sister becomes a full fledged heroine.  Her grief and pain causing her to wear a mask and hold everyone at arms length.  And Ashley Chase is the kind of man that truly makes a woman swoon - wooing, playing that cerebral game of cat and mouse, making a woman feel interesting and cherished.  How can she not fall for that?  Needless to say, there are no easy innings in this game and Chase has to pull out all the stops to make this woman his woman.  At the end of the day, theirs is the story that makes the whole ballgame worth the price of admission.  You must absolutely take the time to dip your toes in the waters of Paradise Cove - you will not be sorry in the least.

This last installment was narrated by Rita Page.  The pitch and tone were perfect, providing a lead female as more relatable and less breathy dingbat and a lead male as smoothly Southern as a cool glass of sweet tea on a hot summer's day.  Moving from character to character fluidly, Ms. Page kept the pace and story flowing - providing enjoyable narration regardless of whether in an action packed scene or a sexy grownup interlude.  There are quite a few very hot scenes and rather than making them odd or awkward, they unfold organically.

Pack you bags, audio peeps, and hit the Florida Keys anytime you need some sun and fun with Paradise Cove series.  And as a side note, while billed as stand alones, I highly recommend reading them in order - they do build upon each other and the backstories are less heavy handed in the last installment so when you hear Brittany's story, you get a completely different POV which makes for great character development of all the Holmes ladies and their tight knit bunch of friends and family.

Reviews

Hooked on you returns readers to Paradise Cove in book 2 of Patrice Wilton's charming series of 3 sisters and their adventures in life and love.  While book one set the tone, book two brings the stories of the sisters and mom running the resort and side characters they make into family back to life.  And without extensive world building and descriptions of every person, place and thing, book two has more juice...and is much juicier with the romance between Taylor and Colt.

The Holmes family has a real routine going - Paradise Cove is doing well and Taylor now has her own namesake Café.  Opening day comes and all is quiet until her good buddy Colt shows up to lend support and pans in traffic to fill her seats and get the word out that Taylor's Café is the place to brunch.   Having turned him down repeatedly, theirs is a friendship with flirting and caring until an old flame shows up and sends him into a jealous tailspin.  Turns out the old flame is a bad guy and Colt happens to be there to save the day.  The classic romance trope friends-to-lovers is successful for a reason - we always want to like the one we love, not just jump his bones (although that helps)!

Naturally the course of true love never runs smoothly and Taylor is unbelievably stubborn and closed off, but Colt manages to persevere.  The best part is the chemistry that this pair has - and with a fair amount of meddling from Anna and the rest of Taylor's team, theirs is a hard fought romance win at the end!  Who doesn't want an HEA from their summer beach read, right?  Having fixed many of the issues that seemed to pop up in book one, book two of Paradise Cover series, will truly have it's readers "hooked".

As for the narration, book two was also read by Cynthia Vail, who again did a  nice job voice acting this story.   Her slightly huskier female voice for narration and there were no major accent inconsistencies as in book one.  Ms. Vail carries the story with strength and delivers characters both male and female that are unique and interesting and keep the reader wanting to keep tuning in chapter after chapter.

I still highly recommend this fun, summer perfect series if you're looking to take your brain on a sunny getaway!

Reviews

Paradise Cove kicks off a charming 3 book series penned handily by Patrice Wilton.  There are a lot of really great elements of these stories and a few less than favorable, but nothing that detracts completely.  I adore the premise of family series - stories that unfold around a group of siblings as they each fight for and against the fate of true love.

The Holmes family moves to Paradise Cove when their step dad passes away and they decide to make an honest go of his retirement fantasy of a Key West beach resort.  The Jersey shore has nothing on these lovely ladies - mom, Anna, and her three girls: Kayla, Taylor and Brittany.  They charm their guests with mandatory happy hours and tasty nosh every evening.  Kayla, the eldest, takes charge of the daily routine; Taylor, the chef, whips up delish dishes to serve to guests every evening and Brittany, the youngest, um flirts basically.

Kayla's life takes a sharp turn when a mysterious stranger arrives and rents a cabin for 3 months.  A seeming glutton for punishment, Kayla foists her charms on him repeatedly.  Just as Sean starts to show some interests, he shies away, taking off in his boat and returning with a half drowned family of Cuban refugees and hides them in his cabin.  Even this potential legal disaster doesn't deter Kayla's desire for the grieving doctor and she makes it her personal mission to help him return to the land of the living.  Theirs is a sensual and passionate connection.  Ms. Wilton manages to craft some seriously sexy moments in an otherwise light-hearted romance.

The big downsides for me were first, the repeated reiterations of how much these sisters loved each other - even when they were intentionally needling the others, there were constant mentions of their sisterly bond.  The other moments involved the over-riding angst displayed by Sean and Kayla both.  The classic failures to communicate and need to hold onto pain of the past by both in this couple was a bit frustrating at times.  However, it wasn't enough to dissuade me from moving on quickly to book two, which I highly recommend.  Ms. Wilton takes a fair amount of time in book one with world building and back story but not as much on character development, but readers who persevere will be rewarded in book 2 which has much more character driven story arcs (or maybe I just liked Taylor and Colt's story better).  More on that next time!

As for the narration, book one was read by Cynthia Vail, who for the most part did a very nice job voice acting this story.  I enjoy a slightly huskier female voice for narration and most of her female voices were quite enjoyable to listen too.  There were some inconsistencies with Sean's Australian accent and that tended to throw me out of the story a bit.  As with the writing, it wasn't so significant that I was ever tempted to leave the Island life of the Keys in search of other stories.

I highly recommend this fun, summer perfect series if you're looking to take your brain on a sunny getaway!

On Voicing Kayla and Paradise Cove

I fell in love with Kayla the moment I started reading Paradise Cove. She is a wonderful blend of being unassuming, stubborn, and sharp. It was a joy to get those nuances of her character and really grow with her as she comes into her own. She can be so stubborn and sexy at the same time. I won’t give anything away, but she makes a wonderful centerpiece for the story and a perfect way for the amazing Patrice Wilton to start her heartfelt series about these three different sisters.
People are always curious about my steps to voicing a novel. First, I block off time to get cozy and read the whole book to myself. Then, I read it again in a “work” frame of mind… making notes, highlighting the heck out of individual lines, and using about 100 sticky notes to flag certain sections. Plus, I always have questions about pronunciations of local spots… just to make certain I say things the way a local would. For Paradise Cove, Patrice was my guide to saying things like Islamorada! Once this process is done, I have a really well-rounded feel for each of the characters. For Kayla, I was able to understand her motivations, fears, and loyalties—and infuse them into her voice right from the start.
Now it gets really fun! You know how it is when you read to yourself and you can actually hear certain voices are in your head? I’m fortunate enough to be able to let those voices out! Contrary to what some people might think, reading the different parts really isn’t difficult. Each voice, whether it’s male, female, old, young, from different parts of the world can be varied by pace, tone, and accents. You never want the accents or pitches to get too crazy because then the listener will be just hearing you-- and not the words. Subtle is best, even with variations in character. It’s the author’s words that are important… not the voiceover artist’s range of talent.
I read aloud several chapters a day, then I go back and edit where it’s needed and upload the chapter files so Patrice can hear them. She’ll catch errors or want me to re-do certain sentences that don’t sound quite right. As needed, I’ll go back and redo the sections and edit them back into the chapters and re-upload them. This is a great system so that the final product that you hear is free of flubs!
There’s always a sense of accomplishment, but also of wistfulness, when an audiobook is completed. I felt so connected to Kayla and her whole family. Fortunately, Hooked on You was right around the corner!
It’s a lot of detailed work, but as Kayla would tell you… hard work is always worth it in the end.

#REVIEW @NetGalley Dare to Lie by Jen McLaughlin @DianeAlberts @Audible_com

Dare to Lie Dare to Lie by Jen McLaughlin
My rating: 4 of 5 strawberries

Dare to Lie is the third book in McLaughlin's suspense series. Filled with intrigue and more delicious heat, the story focuses on little brother Scotty, a secondary character from previous book. Tender (and hot) moments between the main characters are interspersed with a gang war, but the balance is just right and made for a satisfying read. Narrators definitely delivered an entertaining experience. I'm hoping there's going to be a fourth book about Tate. Fingers crossed!

#AudioBook #REVIEW Damage Control @LisaReneeJones @NetGalley

damagecontrol
Damage Control (Dirty Money Book 2) by Lisa Renee Jones continues the hot and sexy scandalous story of Shane and Emily. Promoted as "Wall Street meets the Sons of Anarchy," the Dirty Money series is deliciously indulgent, provocative and full of intrigue. On audio, it's absolute indulgence.

The only thing more dangerous than a dark secret is a damaged heart…

Shane Brandon has been pushed to the brink, torn between his corrupt family and his explosive, all-consuming desire for Emily Stevens, who he now knows is not who, and what, she seems. Has he trusted the wrong person? Will she, not his brother Derek, be the ultimate destruction of his family Empire?

Emily tries to run from Shane, but he will stop her, confront her, force her to reveal all — one hot touch and kiss at a time, under every intimate detail of who this woman is, and what she wants, is exposed. But as he tears away the dangers of the unknowns with the woman in his bed, and in his heart, The Martina Cartel has set their sights on his company, his family, and the one piece of leverage they believe he won’t gamble with: Emily.

Picking up right where the last book left off, the story continues with the perfect balance of romance and suspense. Readers will once again be swept into the story. Shane and Emily unite against thier enemies and while this ends HFN, there's still more to come in the next book. I'm a series reader so I love it - the ending only leaves you wanting more.

The combination of an author I love and a narrator I adore made this a guaranteed good listen. Seriously so good, it's out of control!

Amazing, Powerful Love Story... CALICO @_Callie_Hart #REVIEW @Audible_com

"Amazing, Powerful, Epic Love Story"
Calico is one of the most amazingly emotional and powerful love stories I've read in recent history. The tightly woven plot kept me on the edge of my seat. The narration elevated the story to absolute perfection.

"I couldn't have forgotten about you even if I'd tried. The seas could have frozen over. The heavens could have come crashing down to earth. Time could have stood still, and I would never have been able to cleanse myself of you."

Coralie
Twelve years ago, I ran to stay alive.
Port Royal, South Carolina, was my home. I was born there. I fell in love there. And I nearly died there. I never thought I'd go back. Now, after so many years, I have to return to bury the man who made my life a living hell. Some nights, I used to cry myself to sleep, praying my father would die. Other nights were different. Other nights, there was him.
Callan Cross.
My first confidante. My first kiss. My first love. My first everything: Callan was the glue that held me together when everything else was falling apart. He was my savior. He was there for me whenever I needed him...Until he wasn't.
Every night, I've seen the love of my life in my sleep. I just never thought I'd have to face him again.

Callan
Twelve years ago, I f--ked up big time.
Living life through a camera lens is sometimes easier than dealing with it head on. Scratch that. It's always easier. For over a decade, I've been a master of my art, taking photographs all over the world. Yet despite all of the countries I've visited, the amazing things I've seen, the beautiful women I've screwed, my heart has remained in pieces.
Coralie's the only woman I've ever loved, will ever love. And I'm determined to show her that we're meant to be together. Even if it means unearthing the bones of the past in the process.
A lifetime and a thousand miles have stood between us.
Now, there's no length of time I won't wait, no distance I won't travel, in order to make her mine.
A standalone contemporary romance with hints of darkness. This novel contains serious themes of violence that some listeners might find uncomfortable.

It's Royally Delicious! #REVIEW Royally Matched @EmmaChase

At first glance, this is The Bachelor, Royal Edition. But Emma Chase had bigger plans for this opposites attract romance. When this royal meets the girl he never knew he wanted, little brother Henry grows up. Through flirty dialogue, humor and sweet late night moments, Henry and Sarah grow slowly together. I adored the references to classic romantic literature. It’s significance was woven into the love story and made it all the more sweeter.

And in the end, the two opposites truly complemented each other to the point that each found thier true potential before finally coming together. I'm still not sure though that I liked the twist near the end. The time gap just felt off. But in the end, this romance was royally delicious.

Shane East royally nailed the male narration. His seductive voice was absolutely delicious. Ooh, that English accent! And then Andi Arndt is one of my favorite female narrators. They made for a perfect duo.

Some men are born responsible, some men have responsibility thrust upon them. Henry Charles Albert Edgar Pembrook, Prince of Wessco, just got the motherlode of all responsibility dumped in his regal lap.

He’s not handling it well.

Hoping to force her grandson to rise to the occasion, Queen Lenora goes on a much-needed safari holiday—and when the Queen’s away, the Prince will play. After a chance meeting with an American television producer, Henry finally makes a decision all on his own:

Welcome to Matched: Royal Edition.

A reality TV dating game show featuring twenty of the world's most beautiful blue bloods gathered in the same castle. Only one will win the diamond tiara, only one will capture the handsome prince’s heart.

While Henry revels in the sexy, raunchy antics of the contestants as they fight, literally, for his affection, it’s the quiet, bespectacled girl in the corner—with the voice of an angel and a body that would tempt a saint—who catches his eye.

The more Henry gets to know Sarah Mirabelle Zinnia Von Titebottum, the more enamored he becomes of her simple beauty, her strength, her kind spirit…and her naughty sense of humor.

But Rome wasn’t built in a day—and irresponsible royals aren’t reformed overnight.

As he endeavors to right his wrongs, old words take on whole new meanings for the dashing Prince. Words like, Duty, Honor and most of all—Love.

Amazingly Emotional! #Review Crossing Hearts @KimberlyKincaid

What an amazingly emotional, tender love story. High School sweethearts reunited is often a predictable trope but Kincaid shows just why she's a bestselling author. Her ability to craft a unique story turns Crossing Hearts into a landmark book in this genre. A tightly woven plot, charming characters and sensitivity to a life-altering health issue make this book a standout!

Hunter Cross has no regrets. Having left his football prospects behind the day he graduated high school, he’s happy to carry out his legacy on his family’s farm in the foothills of the Shenandoah. But when a shoulder injury puts him face-to-face with the high school sweetheart who abandoned town—and him—twelve years ago, Hunter’s simple life gets a lot more complicated.

I was RIVETED @JayCrownover #AudioBook #Review @Audible_com @InkSlingerPR

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes the next installment in the Saints of Denver series.

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

REVIEW
I confess that I've never read a Crownover book I haven't loved. And this is no different. Church was a man of mystery in previous books that I was dying to know more about, but Dixie was a background character I hadn't really paid attention to. Church and Dixie's love story was completely unexpected and perfect all at the same time. The chemistry was undeniable. With the touch of mystery, some action and even more sexy time, I was riveted.

#Audiobook #Review: Dominating Devney @IAmVanessaVale @RockStarPR

Dominating Devney
Montana Maidens, Book 3
by Vanessa Vale

Blurb
Widow Devney Jenkins needs to remarry and quickly. Not only is she sought after for the vast ranch her husband left her, but she's remarkably still a virgin. She's quite a prize for any money-grubbing bachelor. She married her first husband out of sheer desperation, and it got her seven years of isolation and loneliness. It was not something she wished to repeat, so she decided to forge her own path. But that was impossible in Liberty, Montana, with the strict rules regarding the protection of women. And she learns those rules firsthand.

Cowboy Sam Bridger takes one look at Devney Jenkins and decides his bachelor days are over. He doesn't need Devney's land or money; he wants her maidenhead. No other man will touch her. She is his. The only person who stands in the way of this is Devney herself. Sam needs to take control of Devney's body in order to sway her mind toward marriage. Once achieved, his full domination of her body begins. Devney doesn't give in easily. She must learn through sound spankings and very pleasurable carnal rewards that being under Sam's control is everything she's ever wanted.

Review
Vanessa Vale does historical erotica good. If you are looking for a spicy hot story, this series does not disappoint. Set in a fictional town with unusual marital practices, this spicy tale is heat inducing! With more subservient women of that time period, the premise was easy to accept.

Taming Tessa
Montana Maidens, Book 2
by Vanessa Vale

Tessa Bowers grew up in Liberty, Montana but never knew of the well hidden and very strict rules for married women. If she had, she might not have flirted and set her sights on the wealthy rancher, Cole Bridger.

Cole wasn't a man controlled by anyone, let alone the little spitfire trying to lure him to the alter. He decided who he married. He decided when. So when Tessa shows up for church one Sunday, she enters as Miss Bowers and leaves as Mrs. Bridger.

Right from the start, Cole dictates his expectations of Tessa, who quickly realizes married life is not as she imagined. Willful and disobedient, she fights against the humiliating and shameful things he demands. With the help of the town doctor, Cole begins to train Tessa to be the proper wife. It is a difficult task, but he'd waited years to tame her - mind, body and soul.

Review
I've read/ listened to many Vanessa Vale historical erotica, and she knows how to write it well. This series is set in a fictional town with unusual marital practices. This book is the second in the series and is deliciously scandalous. With more subservient women of that time period, the premise was easy to sink into... and then relax and let the tingling begin!

#AudioBook #Review: Claiming Catherine @IAmVanessaVale @RockStarPR

Claiming Catherine
Montana Maiden Series, Book 1
by Vanessa Vale

Blurb
Branded a harlot for undoing a confining button on her blouse, Catherine Langton finds herself rejected by the man she is to marry, leaving her in a predicament: mail order bride or the poorhouse. Her decision is simple, and she arrives in Liberty, Montana, to marry a man she's never seen, her only desire to be a pleasing wife.
Jake Bridger exceeds Catherine's expectations at first glance. He looks as if he stepped from the pages of the Western romances she knows she shouldn't read. But she's about to find out that the men of Liberty are not like other men. Here, a wife is expected to make all of herself available to her husband, even parts a good girl like Catherine never expected a man to plunder. It's not an easy adjustment, but Jake isn't a man to take no for an answer, and he sets about training his new bride using techniques that soon have Catherine wantonly eager for his attentions.
But can Catherine live with her new husband's explicit requirements when it opposes everything she's known?

Review
Vanessa Vale does historical erotica right. And this series does not disappoint. Set in a fictional town with unusual marital practices, this spicy tale is absolutely tantalizing. With more subservient women of that time period, the premise was easy to sink into... and then relax and let the tingling begin! The entire book was sexy, sexy, sexy.

#ULTIMATEINDULGENCE! A Thousand Letters NEW! by Staci Hart @imaquirkybird @SocialButterflyPR

cover-wrap-atl

"Lyrical, heartbreaking, and emotionally intense, A THOUSAND LETTERS is a beautiful portrait of an undying love that deserves a second chance."

Melanie Harlow, USA Today Bestselling Author

 A Thousand Letters
Sometimes your life is split by a single decision.
I’ve spent every day of the last seven years regretting mine: he left, and I didn’t follow. A thousand letters went unanswered, my words like petals in the wind, spinning away into nothing, taking me with them. But now he’s back.
I barely recognize the man he’s become, but I can still see a glimmer of the boy who asked me to be his forever, the boy I walked away from when I was young and afraid.
Maybe if he’d come home under better circumstances, he could speak to me without anger in his voice. Maybe if I’d said yes all those years ago, he’d look at me without the weight of rejection in his eyes. Maybe if things were different, we would have had a chance.
One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey bought him back to me. I only wish I could keep him.

#Review: Back Check @KellyJamieson #Hockey Romance @NetGalley

Back Check might just be the best in the series so far. With the whole gang involved, readers get to visit with old friends while watching as another hockey player gets taken down by love. Jamieson has infused more hockey time into the story too, but she doesn't lose the focus on romance. The newest couple will grab a hold of your heart. This is a great read!

BLURB
The so-bad-they’re-good alphas of hockey’s Chicago Aces are back in this emotionally charged novel of sex, love, and second chances from the bestselling author of Top Shelf and the Heller Brothers series.

Tanner Bennet hates weddings. They just remind him that he simply isn’t cut out for any kind of healthy, committed relationship—never has been, never will be. After getting rejected by the girl he thought was “the one” all those years ago, he made a huge mistake and married the wrong person. Now that the divorced heartbreaker has reluctantly agreed to be a groomsman for one of his NHL teammates, the last thing he expects is a chance at redemption with the one that got away.

After Marc Dupuis of the Chicago Aces hires wedding planner Katelyn Medford, she discovers that her big break comes with a twist: a reunion with her college sweetheart. The way she dumped Tanner still haunts her. Eight years—and three broken engagements—later, Katelyn knows she’ll never have that kind of innocent, wide-eyed passion again. Still, she and Tanner soon generate enough body heat to burn up the sheets. And even with Tanner’s career with the Aces up in the air, Katelyn’s wondering whether the time is right to let him in for real.

Fake engaged to the hottest quarterback in the country? SCORE.

They say nothing compares to your first kiss, But our first kiss was orchestrated for an audience. Our second kiss . . . that one was REAL. He cradled my face like he was terrified he’d f*ck it up.

He stared into my eyes until the air buzzed. Soft and slow, full of sighs and little laughs, He inhaled me like I was the finest Belgian chocolate, And he’d never get another piece. A nip of his teeth, his hand at my waist . . . And I was lost. I forgot he was paying me to be his fake fiancée. I forgot we weren’t REAL. Our kiss was pure magic, and before you laugh and say those kinds of kisses don’t exist, then you’ve never touched lips with Max Kent, the hottest quarterback in college history. Three months. Two hearts. One fake engagement.
