Hop Against Homophobia: Dedicated to Bill

Our planet becomes more diverse by the day.  Even here in our small slice of the world, the cultures, fashions, music and food of all nations meld together...and we embrace it.  Regardless of where we live or what we do, we live for our families, our friends, our country....and we embrace it.  Beyond ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, there is the hope that one day everyone will realize that Love is a universal element which should be known by all, belong to all and our country should be proud we have the opportunity....to embrace it!

Recently the GLBT world lost a beautiful voice - one who's gift with words allowed him to tell the world how much he embraced the ideals of love, honor, country, faith and family.  During this week's Hop Against Homophobia, we Guilty Indulgence Book Club bloggers would like to introduce readers to his work as well as the work of other hard working GLBT writers - may you all find joy, peace and love in whatever fashion makes you happy, keeps your spirits shining brightly..and may you embrace it!

Home, William Neale, MLR Press, August 2010

Lucas Reed is a Cleveland advertising executive who returns to his southern hometown to deal with the sudden death of his estranged homophobic father. There, he unexpectedly encounters Rogan James, the former high school bully and now local deputy chief of police who had once made Lucas's life miserable. Reacquainted 12 years later, the two finally acknowledge a long held powerful physical attraction that quickly evolves into an even stronger emotional connection But all this becomes secondary when a local reporter's secret obsession for Rogan threatens not only the end of their newly found love, but their very lives.

William Neale writes comfort food for the romantic soul. This super promising new author takes classic ingredients: characters that struggle against their feelings, complicated outside forces, that ever burning desire to find a meaningful relationship and cooks up one heck of a love story! Like the old adage, "The longest way round is the shortest way home", Mr Neale's debut novel, HOME, depicts the rocky road to romance between two life-long frenemies.

Lucas's father has recently passed. Rogan shows up at the funeral to pay his respects and to finally apologize for his past behaviors. Lucas hears him out and initially struggles to find his tale credible but actions speak louder than words. Lucas and Rogan's off the charts sexual chemistry sizzles on the page. Watching their relationship grow despite their many individual obstacles—work, family, and a very unplanned public outing—serve to build a love story so emotional, so universally relatable. The sacrifices they are willing to make for one another will move the reader to tears.

Neale has a true gift. In HOME, he creates strong and relatable characters and allows a complex story to unfold without forcing it. Empathizing with these men who have one rotten thing after another happen to them, all while trying to navigate the course of what the readers know to be a true romance, makes the story captivating. Far from formulaic, this well written love story provides the reader with action, suspense, sexual heat and more than a large slice of reality. Well worth the read, HOME hits the mark and puts this author on the Auto-Buy list for this reviewer!

  2. He was an amazing, talented writer and a truly beautiful soul. I only wish we had more time to have gotten to know him better and to see his visions come to fruition. My heart goes out to his partner and family - he was such a good guy.
