Favorite First Times by Elisabeth Staab
Life is full of special firsts. Horrifying firsts. Ohgoddidtheyreally?-yestheyDIDgetitonfilm firsts. Amazing firsts. Magical firsts.
Some are a little of everything rolled into one.
I still remember that my first kiss was in sixth grade with an adorable red-headed kid named Zeke* behind his friend’s garage (special first, even though he kind of opened his mouth so wide I thought he was trying to swallow my nose). My first breakup came a mere few weeks later (HORRIFYING first, I kept wondering why. Why God, WHY!?!), delivered by a mutual friend in front of the entire school cafeteria (Okay so nobody got it on film, buy Holy Effing Hell! The school cafeteria!).
I went home and cried for hours. My mom informed me that I wasn’t allowed to date until I was at least sixteen. I thought, being the dramatic pre-teen I was, that my life was over. Over.
But of course, life rolled on. Many firsts. Got my driver’s license (first car!), went to college, got my first job, got married, had a baby. Had another baby. Wrote my first novel.
Those last two things will be forever linked, because I decided to write King of Darkness while I was recovering from the birth of my second child (a very special last, thank you). In a way, my writing career has been my “other” baby. We celebrated my visiting King of Darkness in the local B&N when it hit shelves. Kiddo ran around the store in circles, then schmeared cake pop frosting on my face. I didn’t notice until I got to the car.
Special, a little horrifying (pink frosting isn’t my “look”), and I did make sure to get it on film. Gun to my head, I’d also say the whole thing’s a little magical. I wrote King of Darkness over the course of a good year and a half, often with a sleeping or nursing baby in the crook of my arm. Sometimes I worked on my iPad in the front seat of my car while two toddlers napped in the back. Who knew it would ever see the light of day?
I’m so grateful that it did, and that people even seem to dig it. No book is everyone’s cup of tea, but I’ve gotten some amazing notes from readers that have just about brought tears to my eyes. I’m so blessed.
And very glad my life wasn’t over when Zeke* dumped me by proxy in the cafeteria that day. ;)
