USA Today bestselling author, coffee loving gamer girl, and Sci-fi enthusiast. CK Dawn always loved to snuggle up with her cat Hagrid (the shadow-seer & Netherwalker inspiration) and read. But, with a nudge of encouragement from her lil’ sis, she found writing fantasy stories was even better than just reading about them. So, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away CK let her unique modern tale of knights and Camelot dancing in her head take form and fly with Cloak of Shadows, her Readers' Favorite award winning debut novel in the Netherwalker series. Now, you can find CK writing in the witching hours with Hagrid by her side while being distracted far too often by social media.

Remnants of Ash: Reign of Fae, Book 1 by CK Dawn is an interesting new post-apocalyptic fantasy. Chloe Etain is a mere human college student, Bram Tice is something else. Together they navigates the streets of Seattle after the Fae scorch the earth and enter en masse to take over and feed upon the human population. It will take all the tricks of the Fae who hunts his own kind to train her as a Fae Hunter.

The story jumps in with 2 feet, almost abruptly – going from simple introduction of Chloe Etain the curious college kid encouraged to take a particular professor’s class from his attractive TA to full blown chaos of Fae destruction of the world. And it doesn’t really slow down, ever. There are moments when the story seems to be going too fast, almost stumbling over its own feet, with too much information delivered or glossed over to process and the storyline becomes muddy and confusing. That being said, there is something quite fascinating about it and it may just be the world building and character development are rough and patchy in places. Certainly there is some heat between Chloe and Bram – although it’s mostly a simmer until the end of the book. That felt a bit forced - like an add on.  Knowing this is a series, I could have waited for the slow boil because theirs was some solid chemistry!

The narration by Sydnee Fullmer is fairly well done – it took me a minute to realize the switch in accents for Chloe (who went from American to quasi-British) was due to the glamour placed upon her by Bram before they left the sanctuary of his iron lined apartment building. The pace is appropriate and the characters are all relatively distinct. I did like her dialogue narration but felt sometimes in the fight scenes that the lines felt rushed but perhaps her intent was to display the frenzy of battle. I will have to listen to subsequent installments to see if it continues and if it works with more exposure. Sometimes narrators grow on you – truly.

Overall, I give Remnants of Ash 4 Chocolate Covered Strawberries. It is a promising start and I look forward to seeing more of these characters and delving into Ms. Dawn’s world of the Fae.
