“Can you spot me?” It’s got to be one of the cheesiest pick
up lines at the gym but it totally worked for me (and obviously Dan) because I
thought this was a very sweet m/m romance story. Perhaps the author intended
the men to be unlikely in their pairing but I thought they were perfect for
each other from the very beginning.
Spot Me by Andrew Gray is the first in his Work Out series. I
admit I haven’t read Andrew Grey before this – yep, you can call me a Grey
virgin. I’ve listened to other indulgent bloggers tell me I needed to read him
but with my TBR pile so big, I kept putting it off. So now that we’re
spotlighting him as a featured author, I have an excuse to go out of my TBR
pile for a read.
The premise of the book is simple. Dan works out daily at
the gym with his friend Lonnie. Lonnie, as far as a secondary character goes,
is a bit obnoxious but thankfully goes on vacation and we get a break from him.
While Lonnie is away, Gene, a professional bodybuilder who Dan has been eyeing
from across the gym, asks Dan to work out with him. Up until then, Dan thought
his attraction to Gene was a lost cause, lacking self-confidence because of a
past relationship and believing both his older age and smaller frame put him nowhere
in the same league as gorgeous Gene.
But when a bet wins Dan a smoothie, a little flirting leads
to a date. The men seemed to develop an easy friendship which continued to heat up with a few sparks. While Dan is cautious to take things slowly, the attraction is clear
and Gene continues to gently bring Dan around. While Spot Me is sweet, it lacks
the angst to pull me into the story. Though there’s a smidge of conflict, its
mild and readers can be confident this pair will find their HEA in one another.
It’s simply a sweet romance between two men who meet and
fall in love. For a light touch of romance in a quick story, Spot Me is spot
on.
