Cat and Bones are back!! As you all know I am a big fan of the vampire duo and the rest of what has kind of become the Scooby gang. We are once again treated to the incredible world that Ms. Frost created and the story line and love story that is Cat and Bones is still going strong.
One Grave at a Time, Jeaniene Frost, Avon Books, August 2011
Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans' voodoo queen just keeps on giving--leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.
Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity--forever. But how do you kill a killer who's already long dead?
One Grave at a Time picks up right after This Side of the Grave; Cat is still learning to deal with the powers she absorbed from Marie Laveau and the fact that her dead Uncle Don is a ghost who can't or won't cross over. When her ghost buddy Fabien shows up with a friend, Elizabeth, who needs help hunting down a witch hunter, Heinrich Kramer, who is a ghost serial killer, Cat’s not sure if her borrowed powers are a blessing or a curse. Now Cat, Bones and the rest of the scooby gang must work together to find Kramer’s next victims before Halloween, when he can take corporeal form and perform a witch burning.
There are several things that I liked about this book, the biggest being that there is no relationship angst between Cat and Bones. They seemed to have learned from the mistakes they made in the past and they are stronger for it. I was also thrilled to see the return of Ian....I really like a bad boy that likes to stir things up. There also seems to be a new big bad in town, I don't know what is up with Madigan but I can't wait for the next book to find out more about him. The story line is original and fresh, the flying sex scene has to be one of the most unique scenes ever written. The action and suspense make for a read that you don't want to put down until you are finished.
There were just a couple of things that bothered me; what's up with the lack of ending? There were several things, that I don't want to go into detail because I don't want to give things away, but they felt unfinished, there were a lot of loose ends that didn't seem to have resolution. And while I can see some of it being due to continuing story line there were others that would not fall into that category.
Overall it's another strong addition to a fabulous series, Ms. Frost always leaves me wanting more. I give One Grave at a Time 4 chocolate dipped strawberries.
