Author: ACF Bookens

Narrator: Aven Shore

Length: 5 hours 10 minutes

Series: Stitches in Crime, Book 5

Producer: Audiobook Empire

Publisher: Andilit

Released: August 1, 2022

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Old Douglas Fir timbers bring good money, but maybe not as much as keeping quiet about the story of a murder. Paisley Sutton hates to see an old barn falling down, so when she has a chance to take in a crew of friends to salvage timbers, she goes in with gusto. But when they find the bones from a decades-old murder, Paisley begins to wonder if maybe some things should just be let go to ruins. Maybe some secrets need to stay buried. If Paisley decides to salvage more than just wood and reveal the murderer, will she be the next body buried in a barn?
ACF Bookens loves a good mystery, a quaint bookshop, and a good cup of coffee. She lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where she takes joy in the mountain views and the quiet back roads. She lives with her son Milo and a beautiful rescue hound who inspired Mayhem in her St. Marin's Cozy Mystery Series. Aslan, the cat in her books, is based on her departed first cat by that name, who spent an inordinate amount of time digging up her houseplants. In her books, Bookens addresses issues of justice and writes with intention to disrupt the white supremacy that says that "whiteness" is normal by making purposeful note of every character's ethnicity. She is weary of books that assume everyone is white unless the author says otherwise because being white is not the default of reality. Her hope is that readers enjoy escaping into her stories and are challenged, just a little, to make themselves better people and the world a better place from the reading. Aven is an audiobook narrator living in her off-grid tiny house in rural Eastern Canada, surrounded by forest and chicken friends, and honeybees. She loves books so much she's listening to one almost every minute she's not narrating one (she narrates romance as Avie Paige). She narrates live on Discord with other romance narrators on the Haven server. She is longing to travel and hike in mountains again, and dreaming of sleep in the lava fields of Iceland under Northern lights again, her favorite place in the world. Her past lives include being a carpenter, firefighter, tax accountant, and competitive snowboarder. At Audiobook Empire, audio reigns supreme, narrators are hailed as heroes, and headphones are worn with pride. Marrying pomp and circumstance with quality you can count on, Audiobook Empire is a full-service production house that produces and promotes audiobooks with gusto. Give your audiobook the imperial treatment by producing it with Audiobook Empire. I love a good mystery, and the plotline of Stitch X For Murder hooked me into listening despite being book five in a series I had never heard of prior to this.  However, I can assure you, having gobbled this up like an ice cream sundae on a summer evening, that I will be returning to the beginning and continuing through all ten books presently in this series. ACF Bookens sets several precedents for me as a reader and I am all about it. First and foremost, it is very hard for a well-established series to walk that line of gently recapping former events or character arcs - too much info and you turn off established readers; too little info and a new reader is lost to the pertinence of certain events or characters.  This series struck the perfect balance and I didn't feel I missed a thing.  The other crazy item of note: the story setting felt hauntingly familiar, so much so that I figured out it is literally set one county away from where I live.  Spooky, right?

Stitch X For Murder begins with Paisley Sutton and her crew tearing down an old barn.  While collecting small items for her new shop, they unearth a skeleton, kicking off a search for answers with Paisley's boyfriend, Sherriff Santiago.  The plot thickens when Paisley learns that the remains belong to a reputed war dodger from 1940s. Paisley's father and several of his friends appear to know more than they are letting on.  Through the course of the investigation, the body count rises and even Paisley and her son Sam become targets.  Paisley and Santiago will have to dredge up traumas from the past to solve the crimes and regain safety and peace in their bucolic town.

ACF Bookens writes with confidence and flair.  She creates characters that live and breathe. You can't help but adore Paisley's relationships: with her parents, her best friend Mika, her boyfriend Santiago, and her son Sawyer  Her descriptions of the physical area are so colorful and detailed.  I can vouch that, despite Octonia being a fictitious town, it is in a very real place and is exactly as she describes.  And every scene with Mika and her knitting made me stare forlornly at the basket of fibers in my office waiting for me to pick needles back up and return to my work in progress.

Aven Shore narrates with pitch-perfect aplomb. She manages to create unique voices for each character and keeps the story moving at an excellent pace.  Having listened to her in other books, I had high hopes and was not disappointed.

I give Stitch X For Murder 5 Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.and the Ultimate Indulgence award.

Narrator Bio

Between peddling video games and teaching yoga in her home state of Arizona, Jessica McEvoy attempts to conduct a career as a professional voice actress. This, however, is moderately undermined by the fact that she records in a dimly lit closet with her microphone balanced on a stack of old board games (Junior Scrabble and Powerpuff Girls Monopoly form a strong foundation), but she hopes that no one holds that against her.

Though her main work consists of narrating audiobooks, her first dive into the voice world was through the NoSleep podcast after answering a post from the LibriVox forums. Having been raised on horror movies and scary stories, she was beyond excited to be able to work on the show. Many stories, tortured screams, deranged villains, and creepy little girl giggles later, Jessica hopes to work on the podcast for seasons and seasons to come.

Donn's Hill is the first book in the new "The Soul Searchers Mysteries" series. As one unfamiliar with this author, I was simply intrigued by the book teaser. Donn's Hill was a fresh and unique surprise in that it didn't fall squarely into a "typical" paranormal or murder mystery or thriller categories but was lovely, cozy blend of all the best. Mac is a wonderful protagonist - the fact that she is so vulnerable, grieving her father's death and the disastrous lossof her long term relationship, and fighting the realization that she has psychic ghost connection skills makes for an interesting heroine. She is a loner who finds what she never knew she needed in her new friends, gifts and town as she untangles the mysterious world of the dead and the dangerous world of the living with the help of the Soul Searcher crew.

The writing was well crafted, the characters fully developed and dialogue flowed easily. It made for an amazing audiobook - with Jessica McEvoy narrating brilliantly. As a narrator, she manages to capture every unique character's voice, including Striker the cat's (seriously, she can trill just like my cat does when watching birds!). The cast of ghost-hunting crew and the folks of Donn's Hill will take up residence in the reader's brain as the story flows with perfect pace and pitch. Caryn Larrinaga has managed the perfect storm, creating a story that reads out loud as well as on the page. I am absolutely looking forward to the next installment in this captivating series.

I give Donn's Hill 5 Chocolate Dipped Strawberries and our Ultimate Indulgence Award.  I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Caryn Larrinaga. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Author Caryn Larrinaga
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I had so much fun working with Jessica as she adapted both of these novels into audiobooks! Luckily, I had already worked with her on a smaller project before, and I knew she would be the perfect Mackenzie from her reading of my novelette Hide and Seek and her amazing work on the NoSleep Podcast, so we skipped the audition part of the process. Once each of the novels were ready, I sent them to her to read and crossed my fingers she’d like them enough to want to perform them. (When looking for a great narrator like Jessica, there’s definitely a “She said YES!!” moment that involves much shrieking and jumping up and down.) We decided on a reasonable production schedule, then she started recording chapters and uploading them for me to approve. I love that I get to listen to it as she’s working, so we can make sure we’re both on the same page about personalities, accents, and cat-related awesomeness. Then we get to celebrate together once the book is finally live on Audible and iTunes, which is always super exciting!
    • My favorite unexpected bonus about this process is that it happens while I’m working on the next book in the series, so I’m listening to my characters “talk” to me through Jessica’s performance, and that actually has a huge impact on my writing. Listening to her narrate Donn’s Shadow definitely helped me overcome a bit of writer’s block with the third book, and I’m so grateful!
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Jessica made it really easy to work very closely with her. She requested a pronunciation guide, and since even my own name can be tricky for some people, I sent over an audio recording of me saying the different character names and any other oddball words. For the first book, I even sent her an audio clip of me making Striker’s trademark “Brrrllll,” since that was based on the real Striker’s habit of trilling at us instead of meowing. :)
    • Every once in a while, while listening to a chapter, I’d hear Jessica pronounce a word differently than I do (like “ylang ylang”). Before reaching out to ask her to change it, I’d look it up online… and pretty much every time, I’d learn that I’ve been saying something wrong for literally YEARS! So that’s another nice little bonus of working with a good narrator, haha.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Absolutely! Mackenzie’s first encounter with a ghost is based on a friend of mine, who mentioned (far too casually for something this spooky) that ghosts who are “just passing through” will sometimes sit for a spell at the edge of her bed. In the night. In the dark. It doesn’t bother my friend, but it bothered the heck out of me, so I had to go home and start writing a story about it.
    • Mac’s additional encounters with poltergeists and other paranormal entities were also based on a few real-life events, like an experience my mother had with some kitchen chairs that moved on their own (six of them, all at the same time).
    • I get freaked out pretty easily and I like to let myself lean into those fears and write them down, especially when they take me to weird or scary places in my mind. But in real life, I’m a huge scaredy cat. Let’s just say Mackenzie is much, much braver than I am!
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • Wow, is this something people say? Everyone starts out listening to stories before reading them. If there’s someone out there shaming audiobook listeners, the first thing I’d say is, “Stop it.” Because if they don’t like it, that’s fine, but there’s no wrong way to enjoy a good story. It’s like how everyone has their own learning style; we all have our own leisure style, too. Don’t be ashamed if you prefer one format over another. Whether you prefer to experience good stories via ebooks, paperbacks, books, movies, games, or whatever… just enjoy it! And then do all the content creators a favor and leave reviews. :)
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Striker visits me in my dreams all the time, which I’m sure is because I miss her. Not long after she passed away, we fostered and adopted some special-needs kitties, one of whom passed away after only a couple of years with us. The pair of them show up in my dreams together, always snuggling and cleaning each other.
    • None of my other named characters have really shown up in my dreams. But many of the monsters I write about definitely appeared in my nightmares before making it onto the page, like the monsters in the corners of the ceiling that I wrote into my story “Watchers’ Warning.”
  • How do you select the names of your characters?
    • I put a lot of thought into naming my characters, especially for Donn’s Hill and Donn’s Shadow. Mackenzie is named after my favorite character on a TV show called “The Newsroom,” and I thought that if I was the kind of person who wanted kids (I am not), I’d name a daughter after her. Instead, I named a character after her. :) Her last name, Clair, comes from the fact that she’s a clairvoyant.
Mackenzie’s handsome landlord, Graham Thomas, is named after one of my favorite fictional men and the man who created him: Thomas Harris’ Will Graham.
    • I’ll usually look up common names from the year a character was born, or names that represent their heritage. Then, to make sure I’m not reusing the same name over and over (my placeholder for characters who identify as female tends to be “Megan” and I have no idea why), I check them against a spreadsheet I keep of every character name I’ve used and where I used it. Yep, I’m one of those people who (rightly) thinks spreadsheets are fun.
  • Who is your favorite character to write?
    • In the Soul Searchers mysteries, I love writing the characters who antagonize Mac. For some reason, creating moments where they get under her skin is incredibly fun. I also love writing Kit, because our personalities are really similar but I do a better job acting polite than she does. I like living vicariously through Kit and just saying whatever I want, doing what I think is best, and fighting for the people I love regardless of the consequences.
  • What is your writing Kryptonite?
    • Books and video games. If I’m on a deadline, feeling stressed, or--let’s face it--just awake and at home, it’s soooo tempting to spend the entire afternoon living in someone else’s imaginary universe instead of working on my own. I have to work hard to keep myself on task some days, but I try to find a balance between working and relaxing.
  • Do you write listening to music?
    • Most of the time, yes. I like to listen to Delerium’s Poem album on repeat so it sort of fades into the background, filling up the part of my brain that wants music without distracting the part of my brain that needs to imagine things and think of the right words to describe them. If I need to set a specific mood or get into the mind of a particular character, I’ll switch it up. Emotional scenes with Graham get written to ‘90s alternative rock, for example.
But when I need to write a scary scene, like Mac attempting to summon a spirit, I have to turn the music off.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Right now, I’m working on the third and final book in the Soul Searchers Mysteries. It’s bittersweet to be wrapping up Mac’s story, but I’m excited for her to get to solve her personal mysteries on top of yet another murder (poor girl - she’s such a body magnet!).
Apart from that, I’m also working on a standalone horror novel that pulls from my Basque heritage. We have some deliciously terrifying folklore and it’s so much fun to explore the dark things that scared my ancestors. I also have three short stories coming out in a few different anthologies this year, and hopefully more to come!
Definitely subscribe to my newsletter at www.carynlarrinaga.com -- you’ll get a free ebook, plus you’ll stay in the loop about everything I have coming up!

Looking to wind down my summer in style, I struggle for reads that go well with hot, lazy days and keep me awake long enough to enjoy them.  Then along came Gail Z Martin, who had me at ghosts in Charleston about to destroy the world!  Tangled Web is book 3 in her Deadly Curiosities series and, while I have not read the first two, you can be sure I now will.  The writing style and tone were eerily similar to another author I enjoy and funnily enough, it turns out to be her alter ego Morgan Brice.

I will spare you the recap as the synopsis pretty much gives the reader what they need to know without divulging any exciting plot bunnies.  That said, the thrilling balance of paranormal, mystery and action/adventure in this book makes it quite universally appealing.  It is well written, crafted in a way that allows a reader who is not familiar with the series or characters to keep up without feeling like a full blown recap at every turn.  The pace and flow of the action scenes is excellent - fast moving without being confusing or over-done.  The characters are so real, so multi-dimensional, that the reader quickly and easily invests in the and the overall story line.  And everyone who knows me, knows I adore a good Scooby-gang cast of characters when it comes to my Urban Fantasy tales - give me a team that takes on a big bad and saves the world and I am a happily entertained girl!

A major selling point for this as an audiobook certainly should be credited to Therese Plummer.  She is one of those narrators whose voice is mild and fairly generic, but not in a negative way.  She is able to capture all the unique personalities of from the Southern horse breeders to the ancient Scandinavian demigoddess and vampires who help the intrepid Cassidy and her partner Teag solve the mysteries afoot in the lovely and highly haunted Charleston, SC and save the world.  Most importantly, she keeps the story moving along, making both narrative and action scenes equally compelling.  As I said, hot summer days are not conducive to full attention but the combo of Martin and Plummer managed to keep me awake and engaged the entire time.  I was on Audible searching for books 1,2 and 4 before the last chapter closed!

I would highly recommend this series to fans of mystery, paranormal suspense and Urban Fantasy - it is the quintessential summer read and complimented my stay by the lake to perfection.

Tangled Web gets five (5) chocolate dipped strawberries and an Ultimate Indulgence award.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Gail Z. Martin. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Author Gail Z. Martin
Q: How drew you to writing Urban Fantasy?

A: I love the idea of supernatural creatures and magic in the modern, ‘real’ world. The thought that there are things lurking in the shadows that we don’t know are there...That just turns the plot bunnies on for me!

Q: This series is set in Charleston, SC. How did you pick that city?

A: I went to a conference there, and saw how beautiful it was and how haunted. I decided right then I needed to set a series there! It’s got such a great vibe, but it hasn’t been used in a lot of books like New York or New Orleans.

Q: What does Urban Fantasy mean to you?

A: For me, it’s about magic and monsters that are part of our world, just out of sight, hiding from our notice. It’s ghosts and supernatural creatures and magic. It’s curses and haunted places and things that go bump in the night.

Q: Who are the main characters in Tangled Web?

A: Teag Logan is on the cover. He works at Trifles and Folly, an antique and curio shop in Charleston that really exists to get haunted and cursed objects out of circulation. He has the ability to weave magic into cloth and he’s also an amazing hacker.

Cassidy Kincaide owns Trifles and Folly, and she can read the history of objects by touching them.

Her boss is Sorren, a nearly 600 year-old vampire, who is part of a group of mortals and immortals who save the world from supernatural threats. Cassidy and Teag work with Sorren to protect Charleston and the world.

Q: What fascinates you about the supernatural?

A: I’m fascinated by the idea of magic, of people and creatures that are more than or different from what we expect. I love the idea of being able to do things no one else can do with magic, or to have extra supernatural abilities. And I just like the creepy factor.

Q: Have you always liked stories about ghosts and haunted places?

A: I got my first book of ghost stories when I was a kid. My favorite TV show when I was a preschooler was about vampires. I always wanted the monsters in ScoobyDoo to be real. And I love walking around in cemeteries, looking at the monuments, making up stories about the people in my mind!

Q: How do you get your ideas for stories?

A: Everywhere. I see things in the headlines, or on the History Channel, or I see a movie or TV show and think...hmm, what if it had gone another way? I overhear people talking in the line at the supermarket, or at a restaurant, and that will take me off in another direction. Ideas are everywhere!

Q: You use a lot of local history in your story. What’s your research process?

A: I look up the history of a place before I use it in a book, and I also make sure to look at urban legends and ghost stories about the area. I also look into famous scandals and crimes, abandoned places, haunted sites. If there’s a particular object involved in the book, I’ll look into it. I draw on photos of local landmarks for descriptions. If possible, I visit the site to get the vibe. I also use Google Street Views sometimes. It’s a lot of fun!

Q: How much do you draw on local urban legends and ghost stories?

A: A lot. The more I can tie a story into the setting, the more natural it feels, like it couldn’t happen anywhere else. I want the setting to be like a character in the books, to feel real to the reader. The legends and ghost stories say a lot about a place’s history and the kind of people who lived there, the types of struggles they had.

Q: How do you handle using real places and people in your books?

A: If it’s a public place or a monument or a government site, I will use the real name. If it’s a private business, I’ll make up a fictitious version. That way I can do with the setting what I want without worrying about making a business owner mad. Also, if I make up my own version of a business or restaurant, then I control it, and I don’t end up mentioning a place in my books that later goes out of business! As for people, I generally only use real people who are dead and were famous.

Guest Post
Haunted Heirlooms and Cursed Curios
By Gail Z. Martin
I grew up going to antique stores and flea markets with my parents. All of the unusual items intrigued me. So many interesting things that were strange, beautiful, or just plain odd. Some I didn’t recognize, and had no idea about what they did.

So I made up stories about the items, and the people who owned them, as well as how they came to be for sale. That turned what might have been a boring wait into an adventure. Many of the shops had that dark, dusty look to them where it didn’t seem impossible for magic to happen, or a cursed item to be lurking in a corner.

It always fascinated me to think about the people who had owned those items. What did the object mean to them? Was it a gift? A souvenir? Something with sentimental meaning? It seemed so sad that their stories were lost. And sometimes, I’d come across an item that just felt ‘wrong’. It made me draw back and not want to touch it. It gave me the creeps. Probably my imagination, but who knows?

Trifles and Folly, the antique and curio shop in Tangled Web (and my Deadly Curiosities series) is based on all of those memories, as well as imagination and a few nightmares. The idea of a store making sure that haunted and cursed items are removed from circulation so they can’t hurt anyone really sparks my imagination. After all, you never know where that interesting antique might have been!

Teag Logan—Looks a bit like a young Keanu Reeves. Skater-boy dark hair. Late twenties. Tall and slender. Had been working on his Ph.D. In history before he got a summer job at Trifles and Folly, discovered his Weaver magic, and decided that saving the world was more interesting.

Cassidy Kincaide—Think of Nicole Kidman in her twenties, with strawberry-blonde hair. She inherited Trifles and Folly from her uncle, because of her ‘touch magic’. She’s a psychometric, able to read the history of an object by touching it.

Sorren—He’s a nearly 600 year-old vampire who helped Cassidy’s long-ago ancestor found Trifles and Folly 350 years ago. Sorren is Cassidy’s business partner, and he’s part of the Alliance, a coalition of mortals and immortals who keep the world safe from supernatural threats. He looks like he’s in his late twenties, with blond hair and eyes that are the color of the sea before a storm.
